The red panda is a shy and quiet animal with it also being classified as venerable. Red pandas give birth in early spring and summer after an approximate 134 days of pregnancy. Before birth, the pregnant females build a nest of sticks, grasses and leaves in a hole in a rock or hollow tree. A litter may contain 1-4 red panda babies with 2 being most common. The young pandas will leave the nest after about 90 days. Activity varies at different points throughout the year depending on temperature, breeding and food availability. Red pandas are mainly active at dawn, night and dusk. Red pandas sleep in evergreen trees. They are very good at climbing and use their tails to balance while in trees. The red panda spends approximately 18 hours per day sleeping. Adult pandas are territorial and uses a series of visual displays including head bobbing and back/tail arching and jaw clapping when interacting with other pandas. Red Pandas will retreat up a tree or strike with a semi-retractable claw if threatened.
